Is it riot or riot training? Anyone know what took place here? It looks like USGI in front of them. What's that in their belt at the back, a gas cape?

Poncho. Rolled for garrison duty, but carried like that in the field. I had the Bn Riot Platoon for a while, an advance was called "The Berlin Shuffle" -- bayonet extended like the first photo, stamp the left foot forward, drag the right up to it. Stamp, drag, stamp drag. It would have been pretty intimidating to be in front of it.

Thanks Bob. I forgot about the poncho, it's been so long since I had one. We used the same step, called it the Mambo step, same as when training for aircraft exit.

... in the Berlin suburb of Lichterfelde. I used to take the day off and watch their annual scarper-ex from there to Tempelhof Airbase in the event of a Russian invasion.
