My understanding is that the U.S. issued Colt Hammerless .380 and .32 pistols to General Officers and to some bomber aircrew. The aircrew received them because .45 Colts were in short supply early on and their need for a sidearm wasn't as pressing as say paratroopers'.

Added thought: The U.S. O.S.S. also issued the Colts in both calibres. I don't know if those were marked 'US PROPERTY'.

There are 37 pistols with the serial number 5668## listed as issued to a G.O. Which one of the 37 are you asking about?
