Unusal Type 3 Band
A few years ago, I bought a carbine that had a type 3 band on it. After I received it, pulling the band forward to disassemble it, it came apart. It was a type 2 band with the front of a type 3. The saw off part was 45 beveled to fit under the lip of the type 2 band. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this before?

Bubba-7,
In the last few days I seen what looked to be a NOS Bayo lug with the rear section that would enter the band cut to a 45 degree angle. Looked very much like a 45 miter cut, with the upper end that would fit about half way inside a band, maybe just past the front 2 welds, but still forward of the back 2 welds. There was No band or swivel, just the forward section of the bayo lug. I couldn't figure how they had cut it that way, unless the band had been torn apart. Didn't look like a hack saw job. I just tried a fast search on Ebay and GB with no luck. I think it may have been listed in the ' View This Sellers Other Items' feature below the auction listing. I believe it may have been listed in a misc parts lot being offered by a seller who had some carbine parts. It was Very much like you describe.
I'll try to re-locate it in the next couple days.
RM, This is Funny timing for sure,

P.S. Here's a old listing of a cut off lug. Nothing like the one I seen. The cut off end had a 45 degree miter that would fit inside the band. Long end to the top.

Hi Rog, seems like someone went to alot of trouble to make it look like a type 3 band. Is it tight enough to hold a bayonet? If they had to take off the front sight why not put a real T3 band on? Nice looking barrel under it. That T2 would bring some dollers on E-Bay.
Besr Regards.....Frank

Had to be for looks only - no way was such an arrangement sufficient for bayonetting.

Maybe some GI broke the band by screwing around with the bayonet, popped the spot welds, that held it or cracked the metal and simply trimmed it up and shoved it back into the type 2 portion to hide it. Guard duty gets pretty boring and there are machine shops all over a military base. I met a lot of stateside soldiers that were nervous in the service about getting into trouble. Consider that they would not have a replacement part or tools to take it off.

Isn't that a real Type II band? The ones we thought were PI in a triangle, but later CC newsletters found the markings stood for something else.
Apology to Newscotlander and BQ, as I know they did a lot of research on this marking.
Too late here to dig out the CC newsletters. After spending most of last night trying to find the cut down band I refer to above, I promised I wouldn't stay up as long tonight with carbine parts flu.
