Info on 1936 Mauser please
A mate of mine has been given a 1936 Mauser with the calibre 7.90 stamped on it. What ammo would this fire as in 8mm or 7.92mm?
He also wants to restore this as well and as of yet I haven't sighted it so I can't give you any pics of any markings till tomorrow when he brings here for a clean up and inspection so I'll be able to get pics and post them on here.
With such scant info would it be possible to give me some info on this mauser please?regards

What kind of Mauser?
German K98k Mausers can be marked like that up on top of barrel.....
Check the MKL for pics and you'll see what I mean...
1935 S/42G K98k 'Reconditioned' Rifle (Mfg by Mauser Werke AG, Oberndorf a/N)

Doug

+1 Badger, I would say 8x57mm but I would play it safe and go have it looked at first hand, too many 1936 Mausers of different types floating around.

The information is not quite sufficient. What type of Mauser please? Military or commercial? Military Mausers would be in the chambering commonly referred to as 8x57 IS (often written 8x57JS), which does in fact have a 7.92mm nominal bore. The marking 7,90 (look carefully, it is probably 7,90, not 7.90, i.e. with the continental comma instead of a decimal point) is the ACTUAL MEASURED BORE DIAMETER and NOT THE NOMINAL BORE DIAMETER.
But hunting rifles of that vintage could also be in 8x57S or 8x57R or 8x57IR. So it is not a silly question to ask: what type of Mauser is it? This may sound picky, but we are talking about an invisible object!

No worries mate I was just trying to see what sort of a heads up I could get from that scant info but anyway I've now sighted it and this is what the stamping on top of the action had on it:
There's a quarter moon on it's back with a star above it.Down the left side of the Moon is a "T" on it's side and under that the letters "AS" and under that "ANK"and under the moon 1939.
On the right side of the moon is a "C" on it's side and under that "FA" and under that "ARA".
I'm thinking this may be a Turkish contract rifle. It has a straight bolt handle and whats left of a full Mauser stock.
The last 3" or so are missing some rifling so I don't know what he's going to do with it now as I was hoping it may neve been a restorable job but with the amount of brown gunk coming out of the barrel I think it may be a rebarrel.
All the numbers match except for the bolt so it may be a factory refurb for the Turks?
Sorry the pics aren't clearer as all I had was my mobile phone, regards
