M4 Bayonet

Was taking pictures of some items I may post for sale, and after I took the picture of this Case M4 noticed that only the flat of the butt was painted olive drab. I have owned it for 25 to 30 years and never noticed it until I looked at the picture. Would this be something done at manufacture, or added later? Finish on bayonet is nice, so doesn't look like they were covering up wear. It is darker than it shows up in photo.

How unusual to get a question posted by you Johnny. So, the pommel in question to me shows an arsenal re-do. The pommels are, as far as I've ever seen, star burst rivetted. This one looks to have been perhaps tightened. I've witnessed this by armourers with bayonets that have a loose pommel during inspection. The paint would be an easy fix for reduced finish at that time. Remembering the number of countries that have used the carbine in service, it could have been almost any country at the time...

I don't believe Case used the starburst peening, but again, not sure. The bayonet is excellent, and leather washer handle is tight and shows no signs of ever being loose.

This is a Pal with the starburst peening, and it appears to have had paint put over the peening and area surrounding the peening.

Which is unusual too, because there should be parkerizing over the starburst...this gets deeper.

The peening was done after finish, so the starburst peening would have removed any phosphate on the tang.

I believe Case did not use the starburst peening. Mine is a domed shape also.

The peening on my Case M4 is the same as Johnny's. I also have my grandfather's Case M3 knife and the peening is the same as well.
