Lou, you didn't pack the back of the foreend, did you? The .003" gap you mentioned would have either been caused by shrinkage ( not likely that much, but maybe) or by the wear on the recoil lugs allowing the forend to slip forward. The recoil lugs have to be fixed to take up that gap.
Even after fixing the recoil lugs, there still was a gap behind the forend - but the bottom half. The top half was touching,
