Was at a sale recently and there was a tin trunk full of letters, papers and photos relating to an officer of the Scottish Rifles (IIRC) who was at Gallipoli. Letters were address "M.E.F.": Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. The trunk wasn't for sale, but was left in an insecure location, which I remedied. I suggested they get it all scanned. The stuff is still out there. One of my great aunts was a nurse at Salonika. Zeppelin bits she brought back used to adorn the grandparent's mantelpiece!

Gallipoli rifle
I agree - a very nice "sleeper" with as good provenance as you will find.
Can I suggest something? This rifle is so evocative, in fact worthy of display as-is in a museum - I'd say don't touch the finish (apart from a light oiling - if the wood / metal gets dry). I wouldn't clean, sand, etc anything and I'd do the absolute minimum of dismantling. I wouldn't touch the sling. IMHO you will have done your job well if this rifle looks exactly the same as it does in the pictures when you pass it over to the next pair of hands.

Could it be a Humpter Dumpty who had a great fall?
