Way Cool!!! I've always thought a .33-.35 caliber rifle using a .30-06 case was a great idea. Boring out a ruined barrel would seem to be a very workable solution as with an adjustable gas lock screw you could then set the rifle up to use whatever load you preferred. At this time I just use a regular SA 5.9 M-1 for my hunting. Here in Ga. there are no game animals that require anything more than a good 150-165 gr. bullets at M-2 velocities. Thanks for the post and pictures. Sincerely. Bruce.

Couple of questions:
Who did the barrel work?
Any difference in your chamber and a standard .35 Whelan?
FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

You know, I always wondered about a bigger caliber for the M1. I took a Red Stag hind last year in Mo. I was using 150grn Remington Corlokts. It took three shot, the last one in the head to bring her down. How complicated is it to have a shot out barrel rebored? Is it an expesnive thing to do? I am very interested. Here is a link to my story from last year;

If he is still around this fellow is the guy you want to talk to. He told me that besides the .358-06 he could do Garand barrels in 8mm-06 , 338-06. I asked about a 40 caliber and he told me there just is not enough metal to do it safely.
A 35 Whelan cartridge will chamber and shoot , but the pressure range is wrong for the Garand gas system. Need to run ammo that keeps the pressure at the port with in M2 specs. You could use factory 35 Whelan if you had an adjustable gas plug. Just Another Old Doggy ,Don
