Remington UMC 1911

I have just come to own a Remington UMC 1911 serial #3989 that I belive was made in 1918. the gun appears to be all origina and the man I got it from, whom I have known for 19 yrs saic it was his grandfathers gun in WW1 and has been in his family for all of its history. He is now writing all of its history down for me and will give it to me soon. That being said I know a fair amount about guns and have collected for many years, but I do not know much about this rare piece. Can anyone give me any hints what to look for? Nice pick up! From what I understand, they only made about 20000. If you have the late edition with a one line right side marking, your riding high.

Serial number 3989 is not late.

According to oldguns.net it was made in 1917. They made well over 13000 pistols that year.

Remington UMC only produced M1911s in 1918 and 1919. 1-13.381 are 1918 production while 13.382-21.676 are 1919. Any pictures would be highly appreciated.

€dit: Usually there should be a EEC (Edmund E Chapmen) marking on the left side of the frame plus a smaller E below the dust cover, on the bottom of the mainspring housing and also above the firing pin plate.

Oldguns.net serial number lists are notoriously incorrect, and apparently they have no interest in correcting them. Numerous collectors have given them information that their 1903-A3 records are wrong, but they won't change them.

The first Model 1911 Remington-UMC pistols were not shipped until August, 1918.

Thanks for all the good info the EEC is where it should be along with all the other Es there is also an AA on the leftside of the frame in front of the slide stop lever and 16 on ithe right side of the trigger guard. Is there any way to find out if the mag is original? All and any help is appericated. Thanks again

The AA throws a kink in the story of it being in the same family since WWI. AA is for Augusta Arsenal, and with all probability indicates a rebuild in the WWII period.
