TELE SCT REGTS MKIIs with a grey painted leather case
Just received a Tele Sct Regts MkIIs scope with a leather case.
Scope is No 11418 by HCR and Son Ltd.
All appears good with the scope.
The leather telescope case is in good nick but at some point in the past it has been painted grey. (Pics to come)
Does the grey paint indicate the history of the case?
Did the Royal Navy use Tele Sct Regts?
Cheers
Paul

In the UK
, the Navy used a very similar telescope that also found its way into Army use. It was the Telescope Admiralty Pattern. The grey painted case sounds to me like some dozy arms or G-10 storeman. (G-10. So named aftyer the G-1098 stores where all of the V&A - valuable and attractive - stores were kept)
forgot to say........ The Admiralty Patern telescopes were often found in the No4T kit and was told that these were the ex Navy T's, from the Marines, taken over by the Army when all the weapon side of the three services were taken under the wing of the Army. The RAF also had different scopes too. A little short 20x telescope called a NELSON(?) or another, called the Brittania or Brittanic(?) - or something like that. They had the RAF part number and the AM 9Emark/date engraved near the designation. If you have one, that's where it came from
Just ignore all of this if you already knew it and excuse me going off at a tangent!

Thank you. Not the fanciful expanation that might be found by googling the internet, but one that I am sure is soundly based in reality.
I'll give the case a good clean and let it soak up some neats foot oil or something similar as the leather of the case is a dry as an _____' sandshoe.
A good does of oil will hopefully soften the stiff old leather and it will probably cause the remaining paint to peel off.
Now to find someone locallu who can clean and service the scope.

The coating is (by the book) "vulcanised rubber". It was offered as a manufacturing pattern alternative to leather and seems to have been used by a couple of the makers. I have owned telescopes with the same coating as yours, but also have one now which is much finer in texture.
The pam on maintaining these is here
Milsurps - Scout Regiment Telescope (Instruction Manual)
but the exploded view does not show which way the lens goes back in....
