So you are thinking this is a fairly recent rebarrel (1980s or later)? I reckoned my Cooey Carcano in 6,5 M-S was done in the '60s, but that's just a guess.

Over the years I have found that many of the later 6.5 Carcano's will chamber and fire 6.5 MS with no trouble at all and are as accurate with that ammo as with the 6.5x52 Carcano ammo.

Update on the Carcano 6.5x54 MS. Yes the barrel of the Carcano 6.5x54 MS is from the 80s (1988 I believe, Austrian) and I was able to get to the range finally and fired from a gun rest. 'Still want to fine tune it at longer ranges but one three round group and later a 5 round group were less than 1" in diameter at 100 yards. The cartridges were US made Quality Ammo 123 gr pointed soft points (a company that no longer makes ammo, just brass casings). The 3 group had three touching holes in a horizontal line 5/8" wide, the 5 round was similar with two holes just above but almost touching the lower 3. 'Am more than pleased with a nice fun rifle to shoot and to take for deer in November. I also just received some PPU Privi ammunition in 156gr SP that I will try at the range also and this light, small rifle just might be taken out for moose next year.

Thank you. Whoever did the work was very skilled. It's like having a custom rifle worth 15 times more than it cost initially. The second trigger is very light and probably is what helped with getting a fine grouping fairly quickly....it took some getting used to light squeeze as I never fired a double set trigger arrangement before....now I am sold on them. I tend to do all my hunting with lots of time for a shot so this arrangement is perfect, just takes some practice. Three years ago I would not have even looked at a Carcano or a mixed arrangement like this rifle. Now I am always on the lookout. 'Am working on scoping three Carcanos with double set triggers over the winter and hope that one of them, with the newer .268" diameter PPU bullets/cartridges will be a good shooter as well. Thank you for this and so many other informative posts.

Hello Westkraut,
Congrats on your new acquisition, a fine looking rifle!
I just finish sporterizing mine this w-end, I got the barreled action for $40 last spring, also a Eatons Carcano rebarreled with a MS 6.5x54 chamber barrel.
I will reload with 160 gr. Hornady RN...have a full box since over 20 yrs..!!! I look at the data on Hornady, Lyman book and also info on line... but not decided on the powder yet... have on hand IMR 3031, 4895, 4350 and 4831.
Looking for a little input to select the best combination from member already experiencing success with the cartridge....
Thanks for any help.

the Eaton Carcano sporter chambered for the 6.5x54MS cartridge was imported in Canada by Cooey for the T.Eaton Co.,some time during the 1930.
Due to the unavailability of hunting cartridges or brass for the 6.5x52 Carcano the rifles was rebarrel in Austria with barrels of Mannlicher Schonnauer 6.5x54.
The operation is a little different than normally done since the new barrel is screw on the stump of the original barrel cutt of at about 2" after the front of the reciver.
At the same time a double set trigger replace the military one.
Eatons sold plenty of them, it was one of the cheapest sporter on the market and the leader canadian Ammo maker at the time "Dominion" (IVI, C.I.L) made the cartridges available.

I have one of the Cooey/Eaton Carcanos, but it's not nearly as nice as the one above. Shooting it was quite educational, as I had no idea that it had been rebarreled and chambered for the 6,5 M-S. There's an old thread about the whole sordid affair somewhere on the forum.

.264" Carcano barrel?
I like the stock and Lo-swing scope mount on yours.

hello jmoore,
the stock is one of the semi inletted by Boyds that I finish to saturation with linseed oil.
Left alone for over a month to dry and then polish with 400 grit sandpaper wet with linseed oil and rub till dry with felt.
