When looking for a No5 bayonet - be careful.
There are a lot of copiesout there of varying quality, some fit and some dont.
Prices for an original vary between GBP £100 and up towards GBP £200. I guess a realisic and usual price is around £120
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Get a heap of old tat and rebuild/repair it as per Big Duke's recent repair thread. I have just copied it with a doggy old £10 No5 bayonet that's now worth a lot more

Alan,s price of 120 pounds is about right, If you do pick a cut down one etc as Peter says this is the link to the thread its in two parts so a bit of reading and lots of pics but may be of use to a few out there with a broken JC bayonet.

On to the Indian repro/tourist No5 bayonet thread again. You ought to be aware that if you buy a bog standard ex Indian Army No5 bayonet, made in the UK
or RFI-India, they will be the same steel quality and overall spec as the UK equivalent. After all, their Army dont/didn't want cheapo rubbish either. The real McCoy should have a hard skin tough steel blade whereas the tourist crax will be low carbon mild steel I expect.
Just thinking out aloud, but does anyone know of a quick everyman test that would be a good guide without a metallurgy lab or facility?

Typically the Indian ones are Blued not phosphate and polished.

If you have a look at old Smithy,s site there is a Copy of a JC bayonet, search by country etc and scrol down.

Yeah Pete, you could always do the bend test, if it's bodgy it'll bend, if it's good and you push too hard, it'll break.

My brothers used broken SLR bayonets as scrapers when they were in the REME workshops.

Good idea Muffer...., but I was thinking of something you could do/try at a show. Maybe GSimmons idea is the best. The giveaway is phosphate and paint - real. Nice, crisp, new blue - fake but that's not always the case.
