    Question M1 rifle in .270

Has anyone built an M1icon rifle in .270 Winchester? They are basically the same in length and case size. What would one run up against as far as cycling and chamber pressures? Would it be something that would be worth it? I realize the cup is higher on the .270 but could the M1 rifle handle it or would one need to down load the rounds? I sure like the flat shooting .270.

I believe Fulton Armory used to offer .270 M1icon barrels and rifles many years ago, but not now. The tricky part is to use the correct gas port diameter, likely smaller than that of the .30-'06 due to the higher SAAMI pressure of the .270 and the slower powders generally used therein. But then a vented gas plug could be used to negate any error. I wonder whether there would be any fireworks when the inevitable happens, that is, someone loads a clip full of .30-'06 into the .270 Garand and gives the op rod a goose.

Oh, that would not be good

Thanks for the reply. Makes perfect sense.

Nothing would happen. The rod would start forward and then fetch up with the big bullet lodged firmly against the shoulder of the 27 cal case. Your bolt would be 1/4 inch back I'll bet. Maybe more. There's no way it could work. Not even close.

Now 308...that could close on 308...

Imagine the time-pressure curve on that one...a straight line from your toe to the moon!
