The only advantage of steel cased ammo over brass cased is the price but remember you get what you pay for. Steel does not expand well to fill the chamber. The extractor does take a beating compared to brass and a collectible extractor is getting harder to find and the cost is very high. The steel case is dirty so more cleaning is needed. It's also not as accurate in most carbines. I have found some brands are advertised as being 110 gr. bullets and when checked were only 100 grs in weight so someone in Russia is making some extra rubles on the side. Even the Hornady is being made in Russia. Russian quality control can leave a lot to be desired.

As to the brass it is a bit more in price but it is reloadable and if you don't reload you can always sell it to someone who does as the fired brass is always in demand. At worst you can scrap it and get some of your money back which brings the over all total closer to the steel case which of course is throw away. It's a personal choice as to use the steel or not. Me I don't use it as I like my carbines shooting just the way they are and I don't like my money going to Russia but that is my choice.

The Germans developed the lacquered steel cased ammo during WW2. It is a cheap way to make ammo, especially when you have no brass. The Russians chrome line their barrels and use the steel case ammo, but remember their rounds are rimmed and extraction isn't an issue for them.

One Russian caliber 7.62x39 is tapered, not rimmed - but I get your point. - Bob

I grabbed a box of Steel Match by mistake not realizing it was was steel casings, DUH! Shot them after much thought and talking to other shooters. Consensus was that a box of 50 probably wouldn't do any damage. Shot the box with no problems and seemed very accurate. That was my first and last steel casings through my little carbine.

Is the CMP Lake City .30 cal Carbine ammo a good way to go?

Anything good or bad about it?

This was my experience with a double charged Tulammo and I'm going to be a little more careful with my next rifle.
