Calling all Aussies, Kiwis & Brits...

Any of you blokes seen or heard of an Australian Contact No. 4 receiver sight (with a PH aperture). It was mounted by a Kiwi Armorer on an interesting British No. I Mk III with a Lithgow heavy barrel. It was shot at Bisley by a Kiwi doctoral student for the honor of London University in 1952 & 53. I will have some pictures of this interesting piece coming within the week. If this boyo could talk...well, in fact, the young doctoral student who shot it at Bisley and earned a "half purple ribbon" still owns it. He's 83. Story to follow, too.

What you're seeing above is the Contact No. 4 sight (Made in Australia) and a Parker-Hale 60 aperture (PH60). This sight was mounted on a 1918 No.I Mk. III target rifle which was constructed in NZ in the late 40s/early 50s by an NZ armorer on the north island (Auckland). English action, Australian heavy barrel, Australian sights, English aperture, NZ armorer and NZ student. Rifle was shot at Bisley while owner was working on doctorate at London University at extramural sporting event. Shooter won "half purple."

'Central No 4', for No1 Mk3 and No4 Mk1 and Mk2 (depending on mounting plate), Australia. No4 model defined by; grooved system for attaching to mount plate, left/right scale on top of cross arm, eyepiece mount has a slot for small 4 holed plate system, plus a ball detent in a hole behind the eyepiece. Can still be overhauled in Melbourne in 2010. Status; Still in use as a shooters sight. Simple, robust, reliable, won many competitions, and became very popular' down unda' after winning a championship away from Parker Hale equipped rifles.

Hate to say this, but you certainly disappointed me.
I've been using Central sights for about 40 years, only recently replaced them with Tmacs, the modern Central replacement.
My collection has every variation of the four central sights, I guess there's just nothing new under the sun.

Sorry to disappoint you muffett2008! They're pretty nice sights, are they? Do vintage sights like this have any value and, if so, what would be your estimate range. I'm going to be selling the rifle and sight together but it would be great to know the "part" value of the sight so I don't sell for too little. Thanks.

My disapointment is more to do with your original post, I was expecting some strange new "CONTACT" sight, only to find you are talking about a Central No.4
This Sight has been around since 1934, the model 4 since 1942, certainly not rare, as a matter of fact it is the most prolific Range sight ever produced, and is still being used in competition around the world today.......the value here in Oz would be $150-$180, more for an earlier model.
