Not a chance. I always break out the documentarys and watch them on the 7th. Can anyone recommend some good reading on the subject. I am particulary interested in the theory of advanced knowlege by FDR of the impending attack.

Of course the "knew" of an impending attack . The whole Pacific was on alert and ready for it......a week too early . Thus the feelings " higher up " that the early reports ( planes on radar , subs sighted ) were just a case of carry over nerves from the weekend before. Nobody wanted to look " stupid" again .

I should have been a bit more clear but did not want to offend any FDR fans. I guess the real question I would like to read about is did FDR invite/welcome the attack throwing Adm. Short etc.. over the transom in order to join the war at a time when avoiding the war was still the popular public opinion.

Its my belief that FDR wanted in badly and if he needed too sacrafice a Admerial or a General too do it so be it, what was said behind closed doors wasn't repeted too the public. Many people in the USA felt that Hitler was Europe's problem, there was a big ocean seperating them from us so let them deal with it.

Adm Short, got the short end of the stick for Pearl Harbor, but the same thing happened too Gen. MacArthur in the Philippines?

Air Raid: Pearl Harbor by Paul Stillwell, Naval Institute Press. This is a collection of essays and photographs that tell the story very well, emphasizing personal experiences. Probably my favorite overall.

At Dawn We Slept by Gordon Prange. One of the definitive histories by a repected WWII historian.

Day of Infamy by Walter Lord. A quick read written much in the style of Cornelius Ryan (The Longest Day), once again emphasizing personal accounts.
