I do understand your point Peter but I was told "officially" at my Cadet Armourers' Course in nineteen sixty frozen to death that my explanation above was the case. I have to admit that I never carefully watched a live round being ejected. (I have noticed however, that fired cases never get as far as the ejector screw.)
Your point about the extractor spring is well made. Many times over the years people have said that their rifle won't extract "properly" even with a new ejector screw fitted. It's really nice to be able to tell them (with only the slightest hint of snugness) that it is their extractor spring at fault. (The last one about six months ago on Short Siberia.)
