The Government of this country is a Representitive Republic. That means that certain Rights are acknowledged for ALL, and are above "current daily Popular Opinion" on any given subject. I might object to the Newsmedia's handling of a lot of topics, but Freedom of Speech means they can publish whatever they want, short of libel or slander. The Right to Keep (own) and Bear (carry) Arms is just that - A Right, not subject to the attitude of the day.
The whole idea of a Second Amendment came about from a much better understanding of Reality as well as respect for God and Man's laws regarding good governance. There is always a chance of Tyranny, and the Citizens then (and now) have the Right (and the Duty) to fight back against it. It might interest you to know that the original County/State militia companies of the Revolutionary time period were locally controlled and funded, and had full sized military CANNON in their Armories, and trained with them. And this was normal, even under the BritishKing. And that was to fight off invaders - but it was always there, also, for the use of the citizenry, if the existing government forgot it's duty to the People - and it's place.
But the British back then understood the Magna Carta, and the Rights of Man - better than our Congress does today.
