    Up until '86 in the US you could have legally converted a semi-auto rifle to a transferrable select fire "NFA weapon" by jumping through the appropriate hoops. That's how a friend did his M14, by converting a Springfield, Inc. M1Aicon. But most legal AKs at the time were Vietnam bringbacks, it seems. Including some reactivated papered "dewats".
