CMP winchesters question
did the CMP install out of stock barrels on the winchester service grades?
reason i ask is that the ones i've seen seem to have pretty new looking barrels although they have dates from about '52 and before.
thx,
goo

I received a SG Winchester today.
It is nice enough but I kinda wish I hadn't ordered it.It has a new CMP stock that looks well enough I suppose. But it doesn't resemble any Garand stock I ever saw. It wasn't Walnut. It looked like Poplar. The metal finish all over was as black as coal. The TG was new, a 65 series SA. The bolt an SA dash 12, appeared new. The barrel is a 2-52 SA and new. [MW is .5] the op rod WAS WRA. I didn't look yet to see if it was modified or not. The sights, both front and rear, were late SA.
All in all, I suppose it is functional, about as new, but a relic? It kinda made me sad to see the ol' girl like this.
It is a service grade. Maybe I will grow to like it but I doubt it.

Many WWII rifles were rebuilt in the 1950s. The 50's barrels were probably installed then. It isnt beyond reason that CMP switched a barrel but my understanding is that such serious rebuilding is avoided. I hope this is responsive to your question? H
