Mauser P38 9mm
Hello everyone ...
I have my eye on a Mauser P38 9mm that appears to be in excellent condition. Markings are byF43, s/n 8680. I need an opinion on value. Also, I have read that if thee is an import stamp on it then the value is minimal i.e. $400- or so. What does an import stamp look like?
Can you give me a general idea of what to look for? If pics would help let me know and I'll get some for you.
Have a great day.
Bill

All the parts on the pistol should be matching that serial. Import marks are usually located underneath the barrel, on the the front strap of the grip. Rarely they have been known to reside under the grips themselves. Here is a link with more info on your find:

Bill, there's a great deal of difference in value depending on your geographical location. Here in Canada
you won't get as much as you would if you were in the US. Here we can't seem to crest the $500 or $600 mark because of that. Most people here don't understand markings and collectability like in the US. The import mark here is overlooked. Unless it's a real rough Spreewerk, it probably won't cost much over 5-600...the one you're talking about is a Mauser made and they made lots. Pics will help. What's the price right now? Half the time it's sentimental value...that's driving the price here in Canada. Like gtodan says the numbers should be matching and a BYF (Mauser) or AC (Walther) is more desireable than a CYQ (Spreewerk). The manufacturing was better. There's lots to be considered.
