Possible USMC rifle
Curious on what you experts think about my dad’s rifle and whether or not you think this is a USMC rifle.
It has a Segley 12-43 USMC marked barrel. The stock has been refinished (assume during a rebuild) and is stamped SA/GAW. I’m assuming that it was rebarreled at Springfield Armory as the barrel date corresponds to the use of the SA/GAW stamp, am I right? On the tip it is marked with a small s (I think pre-WWI Springfield Armory) and is also stamped with a large P. Bolt is a Remington replacement with a Smith-Corona sleeve. The buttplate is smooth with no stippling. There are not vise marks on the barrel that I can see and there is no SN etched into the bolt. I think the trigger guard is a much older one as it has a welded bar in place. It does have a Hatcher hole.
Now the questions
1. Do you believe this to be a USMC rifle?
2. What does the large P on the tip of the stock mean and when was it used?
3. Any other thoughts on this rifle.
4. For Jim T, is there a hit on your list or anything nearby?
Thanks for your help,
Jarrod

Also, there are a couple of repairs in the stock.

Your rifle may or may not be a USMC rifle. There's a reasonable chance that it is. But the evidence is not compelling.
Hope this helps.
