Dan,
that looks like a pretty decent rifle. You might consider buying a new fore-stock and splicing it in under the first barrel band. Lot of bubbas are getting rebuilt that way.

That's going to look great when you get it finished.
When I did the splice on mine (have another waiting in the wings) I trimmed the stock so that the splice was just under the front edge of the lower band, figuring that since the piece was going to be used in matches, with a sling, I wanted solid wood supporting the lower band as much as possible. Hundreds of rds and half a dozen matches later, it's still good to go.
Good luck with your project. That 1902 rear sight is really excellent for shooting, but unless you're equipped with 20yr old eyeballs, forget about the swing-up peep and stick to the u-notch.
