Albert Blithe, who DID NOT DIE as a result of wounds in received Normandy in 1944. Everything except his death was correct. He was wounded in the shoulder by a sniper at a farmhouse and the rest of the unit lost track of him after he was evacuated and sent home. Given that the book and movie were based around the verbal testimony of the small surviving cadre of the 506th, I suppose an error is understandable. Albert Blithe died while on active duty in Germany
1967. His rank at death was Master Sargent. More HERE .
