Hi There
I'm also a UK
Resident and have a Deactivated Garand
, is yours an 'Old Spec Deact' ?
I recently added photos and information on mine and the guys on here really helped me out and taught me a lot, so I'm sure your questions will be answered.
You may know this already but the serial number is dated 1955 and the barrel is 1953.

Hi.
Yes mine is an old deac. I was told when I purchased it that it dated from around 1953.
How can you tell from the serial number it is from 1955? Have been looking around for info on dates serial numbers were from but can't find anything?
Thanks.

Here's a couple sites that may help. M1 Garand Born on Date http://www.trfindley.com/pgsnstmpsm1.html There's also a search feature here that will enable you to go through all the past threads and glean information at your own speed.

Hard to say if the 11-53 LMR barrel is original to the rifle. The majority of the LMR barrels found to be original to late HRA rifles seem to be dated during 1955. Keep in mind that many LMR barrels were used during rebuild programs. Is there a punch mark either within the loop of the P or close to it ?? The P being the one on the barrel. Barrels installed by HRA will have the punch mark in this area. Barrels installed during rebuilds should also have a punch mark in this area but it was often overlooked. What I am trying to say is that the lack of a punch is a good indication the barrel was installed during a rebuild. If it has the punch you will have to look for other indicators of a possible rebuild.
