Is that a thrown trac on the right? Why are they all grinning? It's too messy to be a training exercise.

Bob, I think it's equipment and the way the photo was taken and not a thrown track.
Grinning? Yeah, the guys on the beach are hunkered down as if under fire all the while the three in the water are up and tall, not even crouching, almost sauntering up the beach. Can you say staged? Or, some camera man said cheese and Marines being Marines found some humor in it and cracked up.

That was one of the strange, iconic things about so many of the Normandy Assault photos - some guys would be doing duck and cover and some were standing as if in Times Square, apparently based upon where the MGs were squirting at the particular moment.
