Laid down January 5, 1943 at Electric Boat in Groton, Conn., and commissioned January 7, 1944, USS Perch SS-313 would go on to be one of the longest-lived WW!! Balao-class subs, finishing her second commission on December 1, 1971. At the time the above picture was shot she was classified APSS-313 (submarine transport). In 1968 after being assigned Naval Reserve training duties her designation as a sub transport was changed to LPSS-313. After being retired from duty in 1971 she was designated IXSS-313 just before decommissioning. From her seven WWII war patrols and Korean actions, she earned four battle stars in WWII and one in Korea.
