Once you´ve got it clean with no gunk left on it, and removed some of the dings with a wet cloth and a hot iron (I´ve found that larger dings won´t come out), I use a cloth with linseed oilicon and pumice dust to give the surface a sheen and then polish with linseed oilicon (but don´t let layers of it dry on the wood, as that´ll just be another layer of gunk to clean off again).

Charlie, It's a bodge, but it WAS done in service. You can cut a strip of thin card, sufficient to go round the bottom section of the hand guard lips. (The section that sits inside the handguard ring, around the barrel. This 'Packing' will take up the looseness you have, without having to modify or repair anything! Easy & quick to effect. You will be amazed at how it WILL eliminate any play in your handguards!
