    I was also surprised!

    But that was with the Mauser carbine, which has rather fine protector ears very close to the blade. I agree that on an M1917 the ears are much more bulky. Furthermore, the offset is so large (relative to the foresight blade) that I would expect the shots to be off the target in such a case, not just 4" off center, as reported.
