It's just a flake in the finish. There was some rush in the channel and around the spring. I'm glad I took it apart and cleaned it good.

Long tail safety sear. There's got to be some sort of chronological sense to these...or no? What's the safety look like?

I thought in the beginning they had the long tail disconnectors because without the full auto sear, it didn't maker any difference. In the beginning there was auto and not...and no one cared...?? It also has the open ended trigger tail. That changed later.

It looks to be a standard AR safety, not the M16
with all the cuts.

Yep. I tried drilling mine out but haven't achieved it yet. It's pretty hard. I just set it aside. I have other 20 rounders.
That's a really nice carbine. Those stocks alone are worth a small fortune. Well, not that much, but they go for a good amount of money. Over 200.

Bill, sweet carbine.. It is identical to the one I had in the late 80s. I registered it with the original 1990 AW bill in California. I sold it in 1999 after I got forced out on disability retirement.

That is nice to know. I sent an email to a well known retro black rifle guy with some questions but he did not return my email. Do you remember the serial number? And, it had the same bolt configuation as mine? (slick side phosphate, chrome bolt and old style firing pin retainer pin)

Those are Colt commercial mags not USGI, you can drill out rivet

Bill, I see if I can find the serial number. Mine had an M16A1 BCG when I got it. I doubt that it came from the factory that way, though.

My SP1 rifle came from Colt with 20 rd mags that had the capacity limited to 5 by means of a U-shaped piece of sheet metal under the follower. Easily removed by removal of the floor plate.
