where can I buy a .264 M1 barrel?

Here in CT we are burdened with new laws regarding "assault weapons". This makes an M1 attractive as it is not classified as an AW. I would like to barrel one in .264 Winchester. The advantage of the .264 is lighter recoil, heavier barrel walls, good bullet options.... all add up to a more viable round to shoot in National Match courses. Anyone have a barrel to sell or know where I can find one? Thanks

I would like to barrel one in .264 Winchester.

.264 Win Mag???
Or .284 Winchester? Which would make the rifle a single shot without special clips as the body diameter is larger than the rim.
I would think .280 Rem/7mm Express would be easier, except for the need to keep port ressure under control.
Maybe .260 Remington?

Bartlein barrels may do it but they are not cheap I got my 22/250 barrel some years ago with a 1/12 twist and that was $750.oo Au unfitted but believe me they are well made and superbly accurate they can also do a gain twist as well but that is extra.

I think it might work with only 7 rounds per clip...but the bolt face would also have to be altered, so it's academic.

Two suggestions:
This is a C&P from another forum, but Roland has a solid gold rep for smithing M1/M1A's.

This gent. used to offer barrels or could build M1s in a variety of calibers, 22-250 was one of the oddest . Might want to give him a try.

The other likely candidate is Gene Barnett. He made the barrel on my M14NM back in my rifle team days and he made the 308 barrel currently on one of my M1's. Gene also makes the "Fulton Armory" branded barrels. Haven't a clue on how to contact him though.

Some years back, before Richard McCann (of McCann Industries, which has managed to stay in business) died, he offered a "Magnumized" M1. .338 and .458 Winchester Magnum chamberings, IIRC. So opening the bolt face isn't an insurmountable problem.

But the rebated rim on the .284 Winchester or one of it's 6,5mm offshoots seems to be a bigger problem as there would be no good retention in the clips.

I know bolt faces can be opened up, the M1 carbine has been changed to 9mm on occasion...I guess it would just need the right cutter. I'd think the M1 bolt would be pretty hard to mill. The lack of clip retention might not be as serious as that because it isn't going to war, unless you think they'll creep forward during firing and jam things up?
