That number is the drawing number of the bolt ( D28287) followed by -12[B]S[B]A, which is the revision number of the bolt. The serial number of the rifle is the number on the heal of the receiver, behind the rear sights, under the manufactures name, such as "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY". Unless you are buying from someone you know and trust your best bet is CMP
.
Unless the rifle has something else going for it, like it is 100 % original to the rebuild, I would say it's value is no more than a $ 675.00 CMP service grade. At least with the CMP rifle you can be sure the receiver has not been demiled and welded or that it was not a former drill rifle.

the gun was owned by a member of a rifle shooting team and a trophy winner some one said camp perry ?
he had the rifle since the early 60s and had been in a closet in a case since then
so i doubt it was a drill rifle but i do know its a mix of parts. the previous owner had a mint 03 springfield in the same case
so unless he made up the whole grand dad story just too pull my leg i think i did ok he also had a 03 with some mods too the stock too make it more target shooting friendly.( finger grooves cheek rest etc)
next time some one offers me 3k for it i think i will take it
**** m1 garands are going for over $1,300.00 here in the southwest
and i do mean **** miss matched wood crap barrels dents dings etc.
thanks for the info i appreciate your opinion
