Steel oil Bottles

Anyone come across a Steel Oil bottle for the Enfield, took several manky SMLEs in and found one of these in the butt.

It is blackened steel, but more or less the same as the late brass ones.

I've come across a few of these, mainly in the butt traps of No4 rifles. Interesting that the steel oil bottles are a little larger than the brass ones, 98mm long and 19mm in diameter against 96mm long and 17.6mm diameter for the brass ones. I have never seen any makers mark on the steel oil bottles. Photo attached with brass bottle for comparison.

They were made of brass or plastic because if steel rusted within the butt - as it was prone to do, then you really were knackered! Never seen a steel one in my service either!

Like Peter and Robert, I have never seen a steel oiler for an Enfield Rifle. The excellent website mentioned above was at:

Thinking out aloud, as you do when you get a bit older, I'm wondering what I'd do if I came across one rusted solid in the butt! There's be absolutely no way of getting the butt off unless it was sawn off. Unless you got a looooog drill bit and drilled a hole into the base - or top - and bored a hole. Then screwed in the hardened steel SCREW, Armourers, removing broken pullthrough and just...... Well, I don't know really as the rod and screw don't really lend themselves to slide hammers or panel pullers!

I wonder if someone has substituted a steel Thompson oiler for the LE oiler. They had a steel oiler that could be mistaken...about the same size...

I wonder if that was the case, as I have never come across one before.

I have one of the WEC steel top oil bottle but no steel oilers, i do have these other 2 oilers 1 which shows it not actually made of brass but coated.
