American Marines of the U.S. 1st Marine Division treat a badly burned comrade during the Battle of Peleliu (codename: Operation Stalemate II). The battle was waged between between the United States and the Empire of Japan from 15 September 1944 to 27 November 1944 on the Pacific island of Peleliu. U.S. Marines of the First Marine Division and later soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 81st Infantry Division, fought to capture an airstrip on the small coral island. Peleliu island, Palau. October 1944
