I should think that the troops often made their own knives in the trenches, or had family send them whatever was needed, or had their own favorite hunting knife sent up to the front. There were issue knives, t be certain, but I suspect troops generally would have preferred to use whatever they were familiar with. Admittedly though, this is not my area of expertise.

It would depend what war we were talking about. The FS was very popular in WW2 with all the Commonwealth forces and the Canadians were no different.
There were even Canadian
issue sheaths for the FS like the airborne sheath which had straps for ether the ankle or wrist. There was not a lot of choices available from WW2 to today. Since then there has been the Grohman boat knife
which is a great utility knife but not anything close to a fighter. The M7 bayonet which was a OK stabber but that is about it. Recently there is the Eikhorn bayonet which is also a bit disappointing. I would love to see our soldiers get a first rate knife someday.

Many thanks fellows. I'd like to get my paws on one of the ones with the leg straps. I have a few Grohmans of very different construction. Some are very thick carbon, dated others being stainless much smaller in construction. All of them are very cool-SDH
