My First M1 Carbine, Opions Wanted

Around here at a gun show this carbine would be asking $1500 or so with no statements about what it was. Would it sell? I don't know. It is just the part swapper game. I know I'd be very upset about anything fake on it. Makes a good case for steering clear of early carbines unless you really can vouch for the seller.

I got back a couple weeks ago. I went to a local show up there and saw a nice Underwood for $1200. But I wasn't too keen on bringing in back across state lines.

Good discussion on this Inland. I've been "out of it" for a while too, but was prompted to spend some time this evening comparing pics from the auction with my own 6 digit Inland. My barrel band is UI and differs some from the one on this carbine. That front sight is a "sidewards" N which should be OK - it's hard to tell if it's been off, can't see any scratches on the barrel, but looks awfully clean in the area of the key, etc. I believe Bubba is right about the barrel band marks on the front of the stock, not far enough forward of the spring to be from the later type. That rear leaf looks darn close to mine and I believe I see the original stake marks - very similar to mine. The circle P on the grip is identical to mine, but still can't figure out what's up with the sling well marking or lack thereof. I'll look to see if I can find a link to that recent Inland I saw on GB that went for close to 5K. The pictures in that auction are a good study on Inlands too. - Bob

I'm happy that you have an inspection period 320th INF and I hope the seller honors it and will take it back without a problem..

Jim, Neal, USGI, Inland44, phillydude know more about M1 carbines than almost anyone I have ever known, but looking at the parts before they commented, I already felt that it looked very much like a 'put together' carbine, and I've seen many such carbines as this one. I would like to see several better detailed 'telling' photos such as the stake marks for the front sight pin, rear sight etc, but from what I can already see by the poorish photos presented it still already does look like a 'put together' carbine with many differently 'aged' parts... As said, the stock has been reworked at best too, and the metal parts do not match one another's age/wear at all (JMO)

The three carbines offered on GB by this seller were thoroughly debunked on the CMP forum last month. The thread was deleted, which is unfortunate as it presented a classic study of fakery and followup investigation.

First, a poster questioned certain features; others added more doubts. Then the seller popped in and expressed outrage at being doubted. At that point the plot thickened: another poster linked to RIA auctions a month or so earlier where all three Inlands were described as restorations. Then came my favorite part - the seller changed his tune and applied standard distraction techniques - 'all books have errors' and 'gee, we'll never know for sure' plus 'there was so much parts sharing by makers.'

Just before the thread was pulled, the seller disappeared into thin air - another classic indicator. Honest sellers can make mistakes; dishonest ones make noise.

I think that was the best example of treeing a varmit and letting him hang himself. Wrapped up in a nice tidy package with a bow on top. I agree, too bad they deleted it.

You are wrong as are your Forum advisers on several of your points. The band is correct as is the sight, and Big cartouche. IO is faint but there in slingwell. But I'm not wasting time to argue about it. I'll send your check back.
I had 17 Watchers on that auction when you used Buy it Now. If you had doubts you should have asked before pushing the button! Do not bid on any of my auctions in the future

I don't know if you are an experience auction guy or not, but I recommed you leave no feedback and he will probably do the same. If he burns you he knows you will payback, and rightfully so. Best for all to just let it die and move on. Chips

I have purchased a lot of items with auctions. I hope the feed back will not haunt either one of us as both of us were wrong. Jim, your 100% correct about "don't push the button". I based my decision on his description and not on the facts. I bought the story and not the rifle, I know better.

Advice taken with humility. I'm looking at my shoes now...........
