Interesting, two officers carrying rifles.

When I was an armorer, the officers were authorized M1
rifles as issue (there were no carbines)most supplied there own M1911A1 pistols. In the movie "Band of Brothers" the officers had M1 rifles

As I said...after I spent 35 years Infantry...I know that. You just don't see it much in pics. Though they still have their white bars on their helmets. Now, anybody else want to clarify it for me?

The officer with the mine detector is holding it for the guy digging out the mine (The guy with the M1903 rifle).

I think we see it all the time we just do not consider the subjects to be officers.
