S/42G 98k Russian capture.
Just picked up an S/42G Russian
capture 98k. Rifle is very nice, but the Russkie finish on it is horrible. What's the current opinion on 'restoring' these rifles back to the way they looked?

Just my opinion but the shellac is hidious to me. My solution was to remove it with denatured alcohol and apply BLO
/RLO. Here are the results on a Gew 98 the Turks or Spanish had their way with. I think it looks better. Opinions may vary as to the effect on value but I am happy with it.

Well, the shellac fell all over everything when I touched it, so that's exactly what I just did. DN alcohol and BLO
. It looks great. Pics a bit later.

My opinion is I want it to look like it did on the battlefield, not some Soviet
storage shed.

We now have the northern contingent (Aragorn) on board so I know we have a consensus.
