S/42G Russian capture 'restoration' complete.
After working on my RC all day, it is now done. I am beyond pleased with it. A little Hoppes, green pad, and a little elbow grease did wonders. The trick is not going too far. The black crud came off VERY easily, and very litle finish remained underneath ( as I kinda expected with an early rifle as this ) Below are the results!

Add cleaning rod ,capture screws and a sling and you are in buisness. Very nice results. It is a bit difficult to resist restoration on many rifles knowing the adverse effect on value. I am glad to know most here agree that RC restoration of this degree is appropriate. It is rewarding to return a K98
to original apperance.

It came with an original muzzle cap and repro sling, just now got around to putting them on.
Enjoyed finding markings I didn't know were there due to the black crud!
Would like to find one more RC to keep 'as is' just as a rep piece.

S/42G issued with a walnut stock? Most likely, but very nice job, for sure. My S42/G has a walnut stock and does look a little beat. All the way through the war and then off to Russia

I have a Krag
like that. It was carbinized...or school gunned, and was completely furred with rust. I had to remove as you did and now it's almost in the white. I think anything looks better than bubbles of rust. You showed us this one in before state didn't you?

Yep, it had that crappy Russkie black 'paint' all over it, and it really looked horrible. Little Hoppes and some wiping just brought out the original look.
