One other obs is that either he has 6 fingers on his left hand as the trigger finger is outside the trigger guard, I for one would be poking another round up the spout instead of worrying or observing the enemy skydive from a tree (Japs usually tied themselves up there so they did not fall when hit) besides it is the observers job to call the hit and identify the next bad guy that deserves a round, not the operator as you may cop a counter/counter shot while you are gawking at your handy work - or shoot and skoot to live another day pretty easy to quickly disappear from sight in a jungle.

Also only Aussies could put a horse race cancellation due to rain on top of a serious issue priority!

Since his finger isn't in the trigger guard he's not shooting at anything, though he may be looking for a target, given that the rifle is cocked and the other bloke with the binos is looking in the same direction.
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

    Edward Bernays, 1928

Much changes, much remains the same.
