One other obs is that either he has 6 fingers on his left hand as the trigger finger is outside the trigger guard, I for one would be poking another round up the spout instead of worrying or observing the enemy skydive from a tree (Japs usually tied themselves up there so they did not fall when hit) besides it is the observers job to call the hit and identify the next bad guy that deserves a round, not the operator as you may cop a counter/counter shot while you are gawking at your handy work - or shoot and skoot to live another day pretty easy to quickly disappear from sight in a jungle.
Also only Aussies could put a horse race cancellation due to rain on top of a serious issue priority!

Regiment (3RAR), pause by the side of a road for a rest during their 32 kilometre march from Hiro to BCOF's main field training centre at Haramura. The soldiers are (left to right): Private (Pte) Hutton; 4/643 Pte Lance Gully; 3/46514 Pte W.H. Alberts. Three of the soldiers are opening tins of tobacco to roll their own cigarettes. The soldiers are (left to right): unknown; 3/46514 Private (Pte) W.H. Alberts (with cigarette in mouth); 4/643 Pte Lance Gully; 2/2692 Pte Chris Bellchambers. They are taking part in the exercise in preparation for 3RAR's move to Korea. side note. No cheek rests present on the few rifles where the top of the butt can be seen.

Since his finger isn't in the trigger guard he's not shooting at anything, though he may be looking for a target, given that the rifle is cocked and the other bloke with the binos is looking in the same direction.
