M1 Carbine neck ID?
In attempting to handload 30 Carbine for the first time with all new equipment. I ran into some numbers I don't understand. I tumbled once fired cases, decapped, lubed in and out, then ran the cases through a new sizer die. The neck ID came out at .3035". The pilot on the manual case trimmer is .3055". No fit there so I can't trim to length. What did I miss here? I loaded a bunch of 40 S&W on borrowed equipment a while back with no such problems.

The sizer die in a 3 die set usually makes the neck slightly undersize which is then opened up in the expander die to the final size prior to bullet seating. I would set the expander die so that it is just short of creating the "flare" and run my cases through it. Then they should fit on the trimmer pilot.

Thanks for the explanation on use of the expander die. Now understand it is used for 2 functions in the loading process for 30 Carbine. Anyway, got a batch of brass trimmed just right and moving on to the next step. Really appreciate the gentle sharing of knowledge that makes this forum so good.
