Stock has been sanded back to eliminate Band recess.. Retaining Spring was left in place. Obviously very old Milsurp, may even be a Bringback from WW I or from Europe in WW II ( Non- "N"- Berthiers were used by Poland, the Balkans, Greece etc, even into WWII and of course, SCW.

Needs a lot of work to remove surface chippy rust etc. Presence of Rod also makes it a pre-1927 refurb as well...so the departure from Frenchicon control during or right after WW I seems correct.
