1903A3 jam?

My son and I went shooting Sunday and had a serious jam in my Remington 1903A3. The follower turned sideways and the last round wouldn't feed no matter how we tried to free it. Anybody ever hear of this happening before, how do I prevent it happening again?

id need more info,
first , id make sure its a GI rifle, and not an National Ord, or Santa fe arms,
if its one of those, dont let your son shoot it ever again.
second, is it in 30-06? if so, do you have the correct follower, spring, bolt, and trigger guard,,is it in a GI stock? or sporterized??

Your description indicates that you may have a problem with the magazine spring. Perhaps you should remove the trigger guard and examine the spring to be sure it's clipped in the follower properly and is not weak or deformed. The spring should look like the letter "W" and not like the letter "M". If necessary, replace the spring and see if that corrects your problem.

There's a remote outside chance that your rifle has the wrong follower in it. The correct follower for a Remington '03-A3 should be a sheet-metal stamping and have the letter "R" stamped on the bottom in the upper left corner underneath the spring.

the 1903A3 was made so that the follower and spring could be removed without removing the trigger guard, upwards through the receiver, if you have a worn follower and or spring, or wrong type spring, they will pop right through.
example, if its a sporterized rifle that someone has ground the rear edge of the follower so it wont lock open on the last shot, or they used a 1903 spring and or a 1917 , or 1903 follower, they give this problem.
an after market stock will make the trigger guard not fit right, and make it come out as well.
thats why i asked for more detail on the rifle, iv noticed in this new forum, that alot of the new readers have non military 03,s that have been modified.
more so then the old CSP forum..just an observation, thats why i asked the questions i did.:}
