I get to the museum 1-2 times a year and take all the pictures I can.

Here's one more showing a plastic M1 because a jerk came in and removed all the trigger groups and took them to the front desk to show them they had a problem. So much for authenticity after that dumb move.....

No not really was there last summer and took those pictures. Do you have one of the M1 on display?

Defender3 we went to The Evening Parade at Marine Barracks Washington D.C. when we were there also. If you haven't seen it I suggest you see it next time you go to D.C.

Yes, I have pics of the rifles on display. I also have been to the Parade at 8th and I (easier for me since I live here).

When we were at the Evening Parade we were invited up to the SNCO Club to celebrate with the brass. Had a very nice time...

I just finished reading a book written by a guy who lived on Tarawa for 2 years. His wife worked for the UN. He said that every accessable part of the beaches there are covered with trash and garbage...especially used disposable diapers. According to him, the island of Betio is covered with a huge housing development, and the island bears no resemblance whatever to the way it looked in November 1943. If you check Google Earth, you can see the hundreds of houses and the grid of streets that cover the island. I guess it's just as well that you can't see (or smell) the tons and tons of garbage and filth that cover the beaches.

That picture was not taken at Tarawa. There were no LVT(A)-1s at Tarawa. There were only LVT-1s and LVT-2s at Tarawa. There is also no seawall in the picture. Tarawa had a seawall on red beach where the main landing took place. There is also an LCT(5)in the picture. I don't believe LCTs were used at Tarawa. LCT 346 was built by Decatur Iron and Steel and commissioned in October 1942.

If memory serves me correctly, the 6th Marines landed on Green Beach (the extreme western end of Betio Island) on November 24th (D+1). I don't believe there was a log seawall on Green Beach like there was on Red Beach, so perhaps the picture was taken on Green Beach.

the 6th Marine Division was not at Tarawa. The 6th Marine Division was at Okinawi. They were made up of the 4th Marine Regiment, the 4 Marine Raider Battalions, the 22nd Marines, The 29th Marines, the 15th Marine Regiment Artillery, and the 6th Division special troops...theTank, Engeneer,Motor Transport, Medical, Service, and Headquarters. These were all battle tested Marines from previous battles. At Guam they were formed into The First Provisional Marine Brigade. At Guadalcanal the were redesignated The 6th Marine Division. The Only Division formed overseas and disbanded over seas
