When I was doing interviews for BOOK ON SNIPING I met a sniper from 9 Para who landed on D-Day. He loved to talk about shooting, was a lifetime member of the NRA and I bought a P14 off him but he didn't want to talk about that night. When you consider that 600 men dropped that night and only 150 made it to the objective, only to lose 75 upon taking the objective - no wonder it raised painful memories.
I visited Normandy last year, stood on the bluffs overlooking the beach, and then the cemeteries in Normandy. Horrific experience for those young men. You can't help but be moved.
