Arisaka Issues
HI, new member here. I also cross posted this same question on another board, so some of you may see it there as well.
I admit to zero knowledge about Japanese firearms. So let's go from there.
I just received an Arisaka as a gift. It has the long cleaning rod with the push button release and a dust cover over the bolt. Looked at a few youtube videos to figure out how to field strip it. Really not all that difficult. Cleaned it well, although it wasn't all that dirty. A little light lube in what appeared to be appropriate places, and put it back together.
Three things:
1. Before I took the gun apart, I worked the bolt to cock it, then tried to pull the trigger. No fire. No apparent "snap" from the trigger and no apparent movement of firing pin.
After disassembly, cleaning and lubing, still no fire. Tried with safety knob in both positions, no go.
What's the most likely culprit and solution?
2. Dust cover came off easily enough when removing the bolt. I'm about to try a ball pein hammer to get it back on, though. How the heck do these things go back on?
3. The long screw at the rear of the tang is missing. Where can I find one?
Thanks in advance.
BTW, ammo isn't exactly easy to find for this thing. I don't expect that this will ever be my deer rifle, but I would love to get it running properly and take it to the range for old time's sake. Bore looks good.
Addition to post:
On another board, I have been given good advice to insure that the bolt is back together properly. I have gone back to review different internet videos, and I am certain that I have the firing pin inserted into the proper place in the bolt. As a matter of fact, I have tried to assemble it differently just in case, and I can't get it to go back together any other way.

Only thing I can help with is the cover...just slip it over the bolt handle and then key it into the grooved as you insert the bolt. Have patience, it'll go. Your trigger may be at fault, no spring to hold the sear back...does it function?

I finally got the dust cover on. Little tricky at first until you figure out how to do it. Hopefully not that difficult from now on.
I am not sure whether the proper springs are in place on the trigger. This is my first time working with one of these guns so I'm not sure what's what.

If the trigger doesn't manipulate with the bolt out, that may be the problem. Nothing unusual, just like any other bolt gun for manipulation.

OK, here is where it gets goofy. I took the gun apart to see if I could find anything noticeably wrong with the trigger. Looked OK, but on a whim, before I put the gun back together, I put the bolt back in and tried to pull the trigger. Worked fine. Cocked it again, put the safety on, pulled the trigger, safety worked fine. Took safety off, pulled trigger, gun fired fine. Repeated several times to be sure. Worked great.
Put it all back together, and trigger won't pull all the way to fire the gun.
?????????
Something weird about putting it all back into the stock, I guess, but what?

Something must be rubbing or binding, look for marks inside the wood to that effect.

Problem solved on another forum, thought I would post here for general knowledge.
It turns out that the steel magazine box can be removed and reinserted upside down. Looks just about the same both ways, but if it's in the wrong way the trigger won't pull.
