Deer Hunting With Milsurps 2014 Edition
I haven't done as much deer hunting this year as I normally do, for various reasons. I've been covered up at work and it's been rather hot up until a couple weeks ago, among other things. Today I had this persistent urge to go hunting. I call it that old feeling. I usually do good on days when the urge just won't go away and today was no exception. I settled into my favorite lofty perch in an oak tree overlooking a narrow valley about 6:10 this evening with my L42, old #12. Spotted a nice fat doe right off the bat and came very close to shooting her and calling it a day but something told me to wait a while longer. Glad I did, about an hour later these two showed up. They'll go a long way towards my years supply of meat, probably turn out around 80 or so pounds.

So good that it's 7,62x51.
I've worked up a new, lighter 20" upper for my deer hunting AR. May final zero it in the next few days. Had to load some more 55gr Sierras. If I get some meat with the deer getter, then other firearms will get to see some field time.
After last year's dearth o' deer, we're seeing signs of some back on the property. There's acorns this year. And about 80 acres got loggged. Might drag out the C3 and do some open field hunting as opposed to the usual "in your face" stalking.

Phooey, my favorite .58 caliber projectile has been discontinued by Hornady. They did a Great Plains bullets which is the most accurate thing I've shot out of any of my various milsurp rifled muskets. Very few left. May be a one round sight-in for a while...

No worries. Don't think I'll be having anymore problems out of that particular Gestopo game warden. Seems he got transferred upstate. I wonder what brought that about?

These two uppers will likely do the primary work for most of the season. The new (old 1-12" twist Colt barrel, but new assembly) upper knocks off almost a pound from the ol' favorite:

Found a "no forward assist" upper from Ranier that has been substituted for the flattop shown here since these photos were done. Probably get new photos in a week or three.

Tiny ACOG, and no irons. Rainy days will be the big test.
