WW1 Sniper scope - zeroing session miracle

I tried a different PPCo sniper scope on my SMLE sniper having swapped my old scope for one that Roger Payne had spare (thanks Rog). The replacement PPCo scope was a much better and tighter fit but I was expecting a long evening's work to get it zeroed on the 100 yard tunnel range I was using. My previous attempts had resulted in bullets stirking the side of the tunnel wall before they had even got 100 yards! The problem with these scopes is that they are side mounted so impossible to collimate with conventional equipment. The manual give a general instruction that the various side mounted Aldis, PPCo and Winchester sights had to be zeroed so that the bullet strikes 1.5" to the right of the point of aim at all ranges

I fiited the scope, checked that the elevation dial read 100 yards (this scope had not been on a rifle since WW1 so the elevation setting would unlikely to have changed). Imagine my surprise and delight when my two zeroing shots were dead on for elevation and the midpoint of the group was 1.5 inches to the right. I did not have to make any elevation or windage changes. It doesn't get any better than this so I have ended 2014's shooting on a high. I am going to use a laser in the barrel and a ruler on the wall @ 25yds to do mine now that I have all the pieces thanks to the Kiwis.

That offset aiming principle also applies to the Brens too much to the disagreement of some of the gun crews who used to argue otherwise. I used to use two bits of string with a Bren to illustrate the point. I STILL couldn't get the point across to some of 'em!
