Interesting Vietnam movie: Lots of M1/M2 Carbines

One of my favorite war flixs "Go Tell The Spartans" chronicles Vietnam in 1964 through the advisors at a small base. Burt Lancaster is the Major commanding the "Military Assistance Advisory Group" in the movie. I found it on Youtube in its entirety. Correct weaponry for the time: M1icon/M2 Carbines, Garands, BARs, M3 geaseguns nd Thompsons, with old bolt action and pump shotguns thrown in for good measure.

I remember it from way back when it first came out, and a dozen times after.

I have a friend who was in an Army SF Group working in the mountains of Laos in the 1960's. He was issued an early XM177 CAR and told me that the first time he lit it off in an ambush one night, everyone turned their weapons on him! Both the enemy and the Montagnards who were with him. Since they were all armed with Carbines; he cleaned the XM177, greased it up and put it away when he got back to the base camp, then got himself a Carbine so he'd sound the same as everyone else except the enemy when firing. Talk about on the job training!!

Go tell the Spartans was one of the first waves of (4) movies about Vietnam in the 1978/1979 time period ("The Green Berets" with John Wayne in 1968 was the first.): "Go Tell the Spartans," "Deer Hunter," Boy's in Company C," and "Apocalypse Now." Spartans was lost in the big budget, Marlin Brando hype of Apocalypse, Di Nero hype of Deer Hunter. Spartans was low budget, and Boys in Company C was also somewhat low budget by Hollyweird standards. One of my favorite stars, R Lee Ermey, was in Boys in Co. C and in Apocalypse Now. Spartans and "84 Charlie Mopic" are my favorites.
