An added thought if I may. Even those who were there and left records of what transpired had a limited perspective of the campaign and hence a limited perception of the overall picture - sort of a 'front window' view of the world - limited and not complete by any road. Whether that was a component of, or exacerbated the 'for of war' is anyone's guess, but it does effect the recorded history. All that, and for some of those who were involved and reported upon the events, the added component of personal opinion as well as the proverbial 'CYA' factor further clouds the history of the cause and effect of the events.

The point is, that for blokes like you and me who care, who want to 'know' what happened and why it did, and want to honour the memory and sacrifice of those who served and fought, if only because, like us, they were young soldiers once the real answers may evade us until that day when the Last Post is trumpeted over our last resting place.
